Chuguyiv medical professionals explored process approach

On September 7, 2016 in Chuguyiv under the project supported by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Donetsk (Dnipro office) Mykhailo Dovgopol, one of the trainers of Change Agency “Perspectives” team, together with family doctors, nurses of Chuguyiv primary health care center analyzed everyday family practice’s issues.

Start of this training was devoted to the discussion of the survey results on the state of primary health care in Chuguyiv. Several points were discussed. Among them: reasons behind family doctor’s visit rejection; queues; level of confidence in medical professionals and medical system. Mykhailo Dovgopol emphasized the importance of changing the "philosophy of treatment". A doctor must not just treat the disease, but, above all, doctor must prevent it. Health protection must be the issue for both doctor and patient.

Training continued with the exploration of the process approach which was firstly used by Toyota Company. The process, in terms of this approach, is a set of interrelated activities aimed at creation of results for the client. In the process there can be “wastes” that slow the achievement of results or mean inefficient use of resources. “Wastes” often occur between departments of the organization (in our case also, for example, between the levels of medicine - primary / secondary). “Wastes” need to be eliminated. Usually graphical representation, e.g. process maps, is used to simplify process analysis. Process maps help managers understand more clearly sources of problems and “wastes” in the process. The participants in groups worked on the process map of the patient’s visit and vaccination. The results of groups’ work were presented and discussed at the end of the training.

Family doctors and nurses of Chuguyiv primary health care center concluded that a new way of working, operations’ optimization would be crucial for achieving patient’s confidence in medical professionals and in medicine. In the future knowledge of process approach will help to quickly adapt to the medical practices autonomy.
