Second training session on pediatric palliative care completed

On February 1, 2017 the last training of the second training session on pediatric palliative care for the Kharkiv Regional Specialized Baby Home #1 personnel was conducted.

Andriy Penkov, member of Kharkiv expert group in medical reform, President of the Ukrainian-German Medical Association, pediatrician of the highest category, MD, and Olena Riga, professor of the Pediatrics and Neonatology department at the Kharkiv National Medical University, MD, led the training.

The final training was devoted to the development of pediatric palliative care models, participants worked on this issue in groups. Employees of the Baby Home #1 with the help of trainers defined aims and objectives of the palliative care department, hospice and health visiting teams. They discussed the necessary changes in organizational structure, staff to implement the tasks; analyzed the required documents, protocols needed for the operation of new structures. Also participants discussed features of electronic palliative care database. At the end of the training Olena Riga explained how to draft local protocols.

Overall 10 trainings on pediatric palliative care (70 hours) were conducted for the Kharkiv Regional Specialized Baby Home #1 employees.

The training session was conducted under the Project “Creating a new model of family-and-community oriented services for children with special needs” supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
